Rod used to call himself Rodelda and to this day no one knows why. He has a wide variety of interests and hobbies including history (particularly the civil war), camping, Glee (this is strictly confidential:), astronomy, animals, Frank Sinatra, fishing, and playing video games. He is an avid reader of all genres but particularly enjoys fantasy, science fiction, and historical novels.

On January 28, 2012, while driving a moving truck, Rod's vehicle left the road and fell roughly 100 feet onto the train tracks below. It is a miracle that he survived and we find many more miracles as he continues on his quest toward recovery. He has already undergone multiple surgeries to repair breaks and injuries and will have many more in the weeks to come. Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers in Rod, Sara, and Jack's behalf. We truly appreciate them and you!

Milestones

With the major surgeries out of the way, things are starting to move up. Rod had a great day today and reached two major milestones...

The first was that after 49 days (his mother is counting), Rod was finally able to eat an actual meal through his mouth! He's been able to sip fluids through the wires in his mouth for the last few weeks but today was his first solid dinner. He looked through the menu all day before deciding on turkey and mashed potatoes. What would you eat?

The second milestone was that he finally felt well enough to play a game with Sara. The two have always enjoyed playing games together and Sara waited in anticipation for the day that he would feel up to playing something. It may seem like a small thing, but their game of Farkle was another sign of progress.

Aside from these events, Rod worked hard in therapy today. The therapists encourage him to dangle his feet over the side of the bed for a minute but it is very painful due to the weight of the device, the movement itself, and the sudden increase of circulation to his feet. During this particular exercise today, while Rod was suffering these pains, he noticed the therapy aide bent over awkwardly to support his foot. With genuine concern, Rod asked him if he was okay. His mom and the therapy aide burst into laughter that Rod would inquire about the aide's comfort when he himself was in considerable pain. Rod never could understand why they were laughing.
